Patna: The Bihar government has completed preparations for the annual Rajgir Malmas Mela 2026, set to begin on May 17 and continue until June 15, with authorities expecting a large influx of pilgrims and tourists from across India and abroad.
Organised jointly by the Bihar tourism department and the Nalanda district administration, the fair is regarded as one of the most significant religious gatherings in the region, rooted in Rajgir’s ancient spiritual traditions and cultural heritage.
According to Hindu belief, the Adhimas or Malmas period is considered highly sacred. Devotees believe that gods and goddesses reside in Rajgir during this time, drawing saints, pilgrims and worshippers to the town for ritual bathing and prayers at its 22 hot springs and 52 natural streams.
The fair will officially open with a flag-hoisting ceremony and rituals dedicated to deities on May 17. The administration has also announced dates for key bathing rituals, including Panchami Snan on May 21 and June 5, Shahi Snan ceremonies on May 27, May 31 and June 11, and the concluding Amavasya Snan and Visarjan rituals on June 15.

To accommodate visitors, the tourism department has set up large German hangar-style tents across several locations in Rajgir. A temporary shelter near the State Guest House has been prepared to host around 2,000 people, while additional facilities near Rajgir railway station, Brahmakund and the mela police station can each accommodate around 1,000 visitors.
Authorities said arrangements including changing rooms, bathing facilities, separate toilets for men and women, drinking water stations, CCTV surveillance, medical camps, control rooms and affordable food stalls have been put in place across the mela grounds.
The department has also installed mini “Rajwadi” tents, passenger shelters and waterproof marquees at various locations. Parking areas have been designated at multiple sites, including the PHED campus, Vishwa Shanti Stupa area, Qila Maidan, RDH High School grounds, PTJM College campus, Hockey Ground, Son Bhandar, Sports Complex, Gaurakshani and the Meyar Bypass.

Security and emergency response systems have also been strengthened for the fair. Officials said coordination has been established among police, fire services, health departments and administrative teams, while tourist assistance services will remain available at the Tourist Information Centre.
A 24×7 emergency helpline — 112 — has been activated for visitors. Contact numbers of key officials and departments, including the district magistrate, superintendent of police, traffic police, civil surgeon and municipal authorities, have also been released.
Udayan Mishra, special secretary and director of the tourism department, appealed to devotees and tourists to follow administrative guidelines and cooperate in maintaining the religious and cultural significance of the event.
