Patna : The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Friday expelled former MLA Sitaram Yadav and his two sons for six years, accusing them of indiscipline and working against the party’s official candidate during the Bihar assembly elections. The party said the decision was taken on the direction of its national president, Lalu Prasad Yadav.
In a statement, the RJD said Yadav, who represented Khajauli in 2015, turned against the party after it nominated Brajkishor Yadav for the seat in the 2025 polls. According to the party, Sitaram Yadav fielded his son Rakesh Ranjan (Vimal Yadav) as an independent candidate, while another son, Rajesh Kumar Yadav, joined the campaign against RJD’s official nominee.
The party alleged that the three not only opposed its candidate but also “spread misleading information” and used “unparliamentary language” during the campaign. Despite repeated warnings, they continued working to “weaken the organisation” and “confuse voters”, the statement said.
Yadav, who lost the Khajauli seat in the 2020 election, is said to have expressed strong dissatisfaction after being denied a ticket this time. His decision to promote his son as an independent candidate deepened the rift.
The party said the expulsions were necessary to “protect organisational discipline” and to set an example during a high-stakes election where alliances and caste equations are under intense scrutiny.
The action comes as the RJD, led by Tejashwi Yadav, faces challenges in several constituencies due to local rebellions and cross-voting concerns. Independent candidates backed by disgruntled leaders have emerged in a few seats, complicating the party’s calculations.
The RJD said the expelled leaders’ membership has been terminated with immediate effect.
