Patna: A demand by a BJP legislator to nominate Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the post of India’s Vice President has drawn sharp criticism from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), amid political tensions during the ongoing monsoon session of the Bihar Assembly.
The suggestion came from BJP MLA Haribhushan Singh Bachaul following the unexpected resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar late on Monday evening. Bachaul proposed Kumar as a suitable candidate to fill the vacancy, triggering a scathing response from the opposition.
RJD senior leader Bhai Virendra dismissed the idea outright, questioning Kumar’s ability to manage national responsibilities when, according to him, the chief minister is struggling to govern his own state.
“How can Nitish Kumar be Vice President when he cannot even manage Bihar?” Birendra told reporters. “He is no longer capable. The state is in disarray under his leadership, and this proposal is not grounded in reality.”
Responding to the broader political climate in the assembly, Birendra also criticised the government’s refusal to debate key issues raised by the opposition, including alleged irregularities in the voter list and rising crime rates in the state.
“We submitted an adjournment motion seeking a debate on these pressing matters,” he said. “But the government is unwilling to listen. Democracy is being stifled, and the voice of the opposition is being ignored.”
