Rohtas/Patna: At least 11 women police trainees fell ill during a 16km training run at the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP)-2 training camp in Dehri, Rohtas, prompting their hospitalisation on Saturday.
Officials said the trainees collapsed one after another during the exercise and were immediately taken to the sub-divisional hospital in Dehri for treatment.
Of them, four trainees in serious condition were later referred to Sasaram Sadar Hospital, while others remained under observation.
Complaints of breathing difficulty and pain
Hospital officials said most of the trainees reported chest pain, breathing difficulty and stomach pain, with some also showing signs of low oxygen levels.
As the Dehri sub-divisional hospital does not have an intensive care unit, those requiring advanced care were shifted to Sasaram.
Sasaram SDPO-1 Viplav Kumar, who visited the hospital, said all the trainees were stable and out of danger.
“We received information about women trainees falling ill during the training run. They have been admitted to the Sadar Hospital and all are stable at present,” he said.
Heatwave suspected as possible cause
Doctors treating the trainees said heatwave conditions and exposure to high temperatures during the run may have contributed to their condition.
According to hospital authorities, the trainees began collapsing on the track amid strong sunlight and rising temperatures.
Dr Ajit Kumar, who is overseeing treatment at Sasaram Sadar Hospital, said heat-related stress appeared to be the likely cause.
Previous incident during training
The incident comes days after several male trainees also reportedly fell ill during a similar 16km run at the same training camp.
In that case, one trainee later died during treatment at AIIMS Patna.
Officials said training for newly recruited women constables is currently under way at the BSAP-2 camp.
Further treatment under way
Among those admitted in Sasaram are trainees from Muzaffarpur, Bettiah and Lakhisarai, while one trainee has been shifted to Narayan Medical College and Hospital in Jamuhar for further treatment.
Pranav Bharti, an official at Dehri sub-divisional hospital, said some trainees were treated and discharged back to the camp, while others were referred for further care.
