Saharsa: A 55-year-old man was shot dead in Saharsa district, late on Monday night, triggering anger among local residents who have accused police of corruption.
The victim, identified as Maheshwar Jha from Gorpara village under Navhatta police station, had returned home from Delhi only two days earlier. According to police, the shooting followed a family dispute. A team led by Sadar SDPO Alok Kumar and Navhatta station head Akhilesh Kumar visited the scene on Tuesday, with forensic experts and a dog squad also deployed. The body has been sent for postmortem and an investigation is under way to trace the accused.
Residents, however, voiced frustration with the local police, alleging that brokers exert influence over the station’s operations. Locals claim intermediaries demand up to Rs 10,000 to register a case and that complaints often go unrecorded unless money is paid. The allegations have intensified scrutiny of the newly appointed station head, with villagers questioning whether he or brokers will effectively run the police station.
