Muzaffarpur: In a significant step towards modernising agriculture, Bihar’s well-known Shahi litchi from Muzaffarpur is getting a digital upgrade. The fruit, famous for its sweetness and global demand, will now come with QR codes that allow consumers to check its full background with a simple scan. This move is expected to make the buying process more transparent and trustworthy, especially for people who want to ensure they are purchasing genuine produce.
With the help of this new system, every packet of Shahi litchi will carry a unique QR or barcode. When scanned using a smartphone, it will provide detailed information about the fruit, including the orchard it came from and the farmer who grew it. Consumers will also be able to see how the fruit was stored and transported, including temperature and humidity conditions, as well as the distance it travelled before reaching the market. This level of detail is aimed at building confidence among buyers about the quality and safety of the fruit.
The initiative has been developed by Delhi-based fruit export company Superplum, which worked for nearly a year to bring the system to life. The company conducted surveys across major litchi orchards in Muzaffarpur to ensure smooth implementation. According to experts involved in the project, the use of a cold-chain system will help maintain the freshness of the fruit while also recording its journey from farm to market, making the entire supply chain more reliable.
One of the main goals of this new system is to stop the sale of fake litchis being passed off as Muzaffarpur’s famous Shahi variety. In the past, fruits from other regions were often sold under the same name, which affected both consumers and local farmers. With QR-based verification, buyers can now easily confirm whether the litchi they are purchasing is genuine. This is expected to protect the reputation of the Shahi litchi and ensure that farmers receive proper recognition and fair prices for their produce.
Experts believe that this initiative will strengthen the identity of Muzaffarpur’s Shahi litchi in both domestic and international markets. The fruit is already highly valued and even sent as a premium gift to top dignitaries in the country. With the addition of digital traceability, its credibility and demand are likely to grow even further, making it a model for other agricultural products in India.
