New Delhi: Shailesh Kumar, a para-athlete from Jamui in Bihar, has secured India’s first gold medal at the 12th World Para Athletics Championships 2025 in Delhi. Competing in the T42 high jump, Shailesh cleared 1.91 metres to top the podium, setting three successive championship records with jumps of 1.85, 1.88 and 1.91 metres.

Ravindran Shankar, Director General and CEO of the Bihar State Sports Authority, confirmed the achievement, calling it a proud moment for Bihar and the country. Shailesh, a silver medallist at the last World Championships in Paris and a gold medallist at the Asian Games in China, has now added a global title to his career.

The 27-year-old athlete hails from Islamnagar village in Jamui’s Aliganj block and comes from a farming family. Despite financial and personal challenges, he has risen to the top of his sport. Under the Bihar government’s Medal Bring, Job Get scheme, he was awarded a Class 1 government post and now works as a Child Development Project Officer in the Social Welfare Department.
