Patna: Shrawon Kumar, an eight-time MLA from Nalanda, has been elected leader of the Janata Dal (United) legislative party in Bihar, with the appointment formally notified by the state assembly secretariat.
The decision fills a vacancy that arose after the resignation of Nitish Kumar from the post. Party legislators had earlier backed Kumar’s candidature at an internal meeting, before the leadership endorsed the choice and forwarded his name to the assembly for ratification.
The development comes days after the state government upgraded Kumar’s security cover to Y-Plus category, underlining his rising political profile within the party.
Reacting to the appointment, Nishant Kumar visited the JD(U) headquarters, where he met party workers and discussed future strategy. “It is a positive development; I extend my congratulations to him,” he said.
Kumar, who first entered the Bihar legislative assembly in 1995, has retained his seat in every subsequent election, winning mandates in 2000, both elections in 2005, and in 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025. His repeated victories have cemented his standing as one of the party’s most experienced legislators.
Over the years, he has held key positions in government, including minister for rural development and minister for parliamentary affairs, where he was responsible for coordination between the executive and the legislature. Within the assembly, he has also served as chief whip, and is regarded as a senior figure involved in the party’s decision-making.
