Jamui: Bihar’s Sports and IT Minister, Shreyasi Singh, has strongly criticised a statement made by the husband of an Uttarakhand minister about Bihari women, calling it “extremely unfortunate” and “against the dignity of women”. Speaking in Jamui, Singh said such comments were unacceptable and sent the wrong message to society.
“People in public life should exercise caution in their choice of words,” she said. “Even though an apology has been issued on social media, I will not forgive such remarks.”
Singh expressed hope that politicians and public figures would refrain from using irresponsible language in the future.
Promoting sports and opportunities in Bihar
The minister also outlined efforts by the Bihar government to boost sports in the state. She announced plans for a new sponsorship portal for emerging athletes, which will provide financial support of up to Rs 3 lakh at one level and Rs 5 lakh at another. Schemes such as “Win a medal, get a job” have been credited with increasing morale among players and positioning sports as a viable career path.
Infrastructure development is underway across the state, with Jamui selected for shooting sports, Banka for water sports, and initiatives to promote swimming and other disciplines. Singh also highlighted the expansion of the Eklavya College scheme: from an initial plan to open one college per district, the government now aims to operationalise 68 colleges, with 15 currently active.
Several prominent athletes, including Saina Nehwal and Pullela Gopichand, have reportedly shown interest in setting up sports academies in Bihar, offering high-level training and mentorship to local athletes.
Investment and IT sector growth
On the technology front, Singh said more than ten memorandums of understanding (MoUs) have been signed to attract private investment to Bihar, which is expected to create large-scale employment opportunities for young people.
Addressing questions about Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, entering politics, the minister said there would be no objection. She praised Nitish Kumar’s leadership in transforming Bihar, adding: “For every child, their parents are the biggest role models.”
