Vaishali: A civil court in Vaishali pronounced sentencing in a 34-year-old criminal case related to a murderous assault, awarding imprisonment terms to five convicted individuals, including an 85-year-old man.
The case, registered in 1992 under Jurawanpur police station limits in Raghopur, concluded with the court delivering final sentencing after the conviction was pronounced earlier on May 26.
Case Background
According to court records, the incident dates back to 1992 when Adalat Rai and his wife were allegedly attacked in a violent assault involving gunfire. Following the incident, a complaint was lodged naming nine accused persons.
Over the decades, the trial continued in court proceedings. During this period, four of the accused died, leaving five individuals to face trial.
Court Verdict
The court found all five remaining accused guilty on May 26. In the sentencing order issued on Friday, the court awarded 85-year-old Deepa Rai three years of imprisonment.
Considering his age and health condition, the court granted him provisional bail, allowing him to approach a higher court in appeal.
The remaining four convicts were sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment each and fined Rs 25,000 per person.
Custody and Jail Transfer
Following the sentencing, police took the four convicts into custody and sent them to jail. Deepa Rai was not immediately sent to prison due to the court’s order granting provisional bail.
Proceedings and Observations
Court proceedings saw a tense atmosphere as the judgment was announced. Officials present in the courtroom noted the prolonged nature of the case, which remained pending for over three decades.
The Additional Public Prosecutor said the case reflected the slow pace of long-pending trials, while also noting that the verdict reinforces the principle that justice may be delayed but is ultimately delivered.
