Patna: Accidentally deleting a vital WhatsApp message can be frustrating, especially if you didn’t have chat backup enabled. While WhatsApp offers built-in options to restore messages via Google Drive or iCloud, limited free storage and user settings often leave many without a recent backup.
However, it’s still possible to retrieve deleted messages through a few safe and simple methods — with or without backup.
Recovering Chats Without Backup
For users who haven’t enabled WhatsApp backups, third-party recovery tools such as Dr.Fone or iMyFone can help retrieve deleted chats. To use these tools:
Install the recovery tool on your PC or Mac.
- Connect your Android or iPhone device via USB and enable USB Debugging if prompted.
- Allow the software to scan your device. The program will attempt to recover deleted messages from internal storage.
Privacy Warning: Using third-party recovery apps may expose your personal data and pose security risks. It’s advisable to use only official recovery options provided by WhatsApp or Meta. Always verify software authenticity before installing.
Recovering Chats with Backup Enabled
If you previously backed up your WhatsApp data:
- Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
- Verify your mobile number.
- Select ‘Restore’ when prompted to recover your chats from Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iOS).
- Wait for restoration to complete — deleted messages should reappear automatically.
For Android Users: Local Backup Method
WhatsApp automatically creates local backups in your phone’s internal storage. To restore from local files:
- Open File Manager → navigate to /WhatsApp/Databases/.
- Locate the latest file named msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt14. Rename it to msgstore.db.crypt14.
- Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
- When prompted, tap ‘Restore chat history’ to recover your deleted messages.
- If restoration doesn’t appear, clear cache or ensure Google Drive backup is turned off before retrying.
