Patna: Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has accused the previous 15-year regime under Lalu Prasad of neglecting libraries and intellectual hubs, crediting the revival of such centers to the NDA government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Speaking at the 112th Foundation Day celebrations of the Gopal Narayan Public Library-cum-Museum in Paliganj, Choudhary announced plans to connect the library to a broader cultural corridor.
Choudhary praised the efforts made to preserve and modernize the library, noting that under Nitish Kumar’s leadership, the library received a new building, and its invaluable manuscripts were digitized. He highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting and developing intellectual institutions, saying, “The government is dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and modernization of libraries for the benefit of future generations.”
During the event, Choudhary lauded the legacy of Babu Gopal Narayan, whose work in safeguarding intellectual and archaeological heritage during British rule remains a cornerstone of the library’s significance. He added that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had inaugurated the new building of the Bharatpura Library-cum-Museum in 2017, following his participation in its centenary celebrations in 2012, showcasing his consistent interest in preserving Bihar’s cultural and historical treasures.
Choudhary also underscored the advancements made at the Gopal Narayan Public Library-cum-Museum, including the digitization of one lakh manuscript pages and the installation of projection systems to make these accessible to the public and researchers.
Looking to the future, the Deputy Chief Minister said the government would seriously consider proposals to elevate the library as a tourist destination by linking it with the Ular Sun Temple and the Maner Tourist Centre. “We are committed to preserving Bihar’s rich heritage while ensuring it becomes a source of pride and education for locals and visitors alike,” he said.
