Patna: A fierce political row has erupted in Bihar over the Election Commission’s special revision of the state’s voter list ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Opposition parties have accused the central and state governments of manipulating the process, escalating tensions both on the streets and inside the legislature.
RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has launched a scathing attack on the NDA government, alleging a direct threat to democratic values and the Constitution. In a social media post shared, Yadav wrote, “The killers of democracy now want to end Baba Saheb’s Constitution by choosing voters of their choice.” The post included a graphic contrasting a constitutional principle — that voters choose the government — with imagery suggesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar are attempting to reverse that process.

The controversy has spilled into both houses of the Bihar Legislature. Opposition MLAs and MLCs have been wearing black attire since the monsoon session began, staging protests and demanding a formal discussion on the voter list revision. On the fourth day of the session, tensions flared into a physical altercation between ruling and opposition lawmakers, forcing marshals to intervene.
Opposition leaders claim the Election Commission’s actions, allegedly influenced by the ruling alliance, are aimed at manipulating the electoral roll to favour the NDA. The RJD and its allies have vowed to intensify their protests until the government addresses their concerns in the legislature.
