Patna: Bihar Police shot and injured a man described as a notorious criminal during an encounter in Patna on Sunday, as part of an ongoing crackdown on organised crime.
The incident took place near Biscoman Golambar in the Alamganj police station area, where officers opened fire on Vijay Sahni, who is facing more than a dozen criminal cases including charges of murder, looting and robbery. Police said Sahni was shot in the leg when he allegedly attempted to attack them. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
Senior officers, including Patna SSP Kartikeya K Sharma, reached the scene shortly after the shooting. City Superintendent of Police Parichay Kumar confirmed that Sahni was wanted in several high-profile cases, including the murder of businessman Gopal Khemka. “Police fired in self-defence. Sahni has a long criminal history,” he said.
The encounter was conducted under “Operation Langda”, a sustained campaign by Patna police to apprehend repeat offenders. Deputy superintendent of police Rajkishore Singh also joined the investigation at the site.
The shooting comes amid a spate of police encounters in Bihar in recent weeks. On Saturday, Patna police shot and arrested a suspect in the killing of sand trader Ramakant Yadav after he allegedly tried to escape custody. In Siwan district the same day, police shot another accused, Lucky Tiwari, injuring him in the leg before taking him into custody.
