Patna: A major political controversy has broken out in Bihar after remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother during a Congress event triggered anger among BJP workers. Demonstrations spread across several districts, including Patna, Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga, where clashes broke out between BJP and Congress supporters. Stones were thrown, sticks were used and several people were injured. The protests have now reached Delhi as BJP leaders continue their demand for a public apology from Congress.
Prashant Kishor, leader of the Jan Suraj Party and a well-known political strategist, strongly criticised Congress over the incident. Speaking at a public meeting in Samastipur, Kishor said it was unacceptable to abuse the Prime Minister or his family. “Narendra Modi is not just the leader of a party, he is the Prime Minister of the country. Political opposition is fair, but abusing someone’s mother or sister is not right. Congress should apologise for this,” he said.
Kishor also explained that responsibility lies with those who allowed such remarks from their platform. He said while it was normal to criticise government policies or highlight issues such as Bihar’s lack of development, personal attacks damaged the dignity of politics. “I also say every day that the Prime Minister asks for votes in Bihar but sets up factories in Gujarat. That is a valid criticism. But crossing the line into personal insults is wrong,” he added.
The matter has also moved into the courts and police stations. A case has been filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Muzaffarpur, and complaints have been lodged in two Patna police stations. In Darbhanga, police have arrested the accused and sent him to jail. Despite this, BJP workers are continuing their protests, claiming Congress must take responsibility and issue an open apology.
On Friday, BJP workers demonstrated outside Congress offices across Bihar, including the state headquarters at Sadakat Ashram in Patna. Tensions flared as supporters of both parties clashed, leading to injuries and property damage. In Muzaffarpur too, crowds gathered, raising slogans against each other. The protests later spread to Delhi, where BJP staged fresh demonstrations to keep up the pressure.
The controversy has added to the already heated political atmosphere in Bihar, where both BJP and Congress are competing to strengthen their hold ahead of upcoming elections. Kishor’s intervention, seen as indirect support to the BJP’s stand, has further increased pressure on Congress to issue an apology and prevent the situation from escalating further.
