Patna: Bihar is set to build packhouses near several emerging airports in an effort to strengthen the export pipeline for fruits, vegetables, and other horticultural crops, as the state looks to combine improved air connectivity with better logistics for agricultural producers.
The initiative involves constructing pack houses near new airport sites in Munger, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Saharsa, Birpur in Supaul district, and Valmikinagar in West Champaran. Officials said the facilities will allow produce to be sorted, graded, processed, and packaged to international standards before being dispatched through air cargo.
The move is aimed at addressing a long-standing gap in Bihar’s agricultural supply chain. Despite high annual production of vegetables and seasonal fruits, farmers frequently receive lower prices because of inadequate packaging and logistical support. Transport delays often lead to spoilage, making it harder for producers to access lucrative markets outside the state and abroad.
Agriculture department officials said the creation of pack houses near airports will significantly reduce turnaround time, enabling shipments to reach distant markets much faster. The state expects the initiative to improve farmers’ incomes and open new domestic and international avenues for horticultural produce.
With airports under development across multiple districts, authorities believe the combination of better air cargo infrastructure and upgraded handling facilities will give Bihar’s agricultural sector a substantial competitive edge.
