Patna: Bihar is set to open its first dedicated traffic training institute in Patna, modelled on similar centres in Mumbai and Delhi, officials announced on Monday. The institute will provide training to personnel ranging from constables to senior officers, aiming to improve the efficiency of traffic management across the state.
Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Choudhary made the announcement at a meeting held at the police headquarters, which was attended by the Director General of Police, Additional Director General of Traffic, and other senior officials. Choudhary emphasised the importance of training in enhancing traffic control and called for an expansion of the state’s traffic police force.
As part of a broader strategy to streamline traffic management, the Home Minister instructed officials to install CCTV cameras at entry and exit points in panchayats and municipal areas. He also directed strict action against traffic violations, the deployment of private cranes to remove illegally parked vehicles, and the establishment of a traffic command and control centre near Patna Junction. Traffic awareness campaigns will also be launched in schools, colleges, panchayats, and urban areas.
Comprehensive Training Programme
The institute’s training programmes will range from one week to six months, incorporating both indoor and outdoor modules. Traffic experts from Bihar, as well as faculty from other states, will lead courses covering basic skills, refresher sessions, and specialised training. Personnel will learn how to manage VIP convoys, control traffic during festivals, fairs, and rallies, and transport injured individuals safely during accidents.
Additionally, the institute will develop traffic modules for major routes in Bihar, including key junctions in Patna. For instance, roundabouts and critical turns along the route from Patna Junction to Danapur will be mapped and included in training exercises.
Proposal in Place
Traffic ADG Sudhanshu Kumar confirmed that a proposal for the institute is ready. The facility will be located in Patna or its surrounding areas, with land acquisition currently underway. Once operational, it will provide systematic training to all ranks of traffic personnel across the state.
