Patna: A 37-year-old woman was injured on Sunday evening after two men allegedly threw acid on her and pushed her into a roadside drain in Mokama, a busy market town in Bihar, police said.
The woman, who runs a beauty parlour in the local market, was returning home after closing her shop when the attack took place. According to police, she was walking with two or three other women when the assailants, riding a motorcycle, intercepted the group near the Kali temple on Station Road.
Station House Officer Kunal Kumar said the two men were known to the victim. An argument reportedly broke out between them before one of the attackers poured a liquid from a bottle onto the woman’s face. The men then pushed her into a nearby drain and fled the scene.
Local residents rushed to her aid and pulled her out of the drain before taking her to Nazareth Hospital. After initial treatment, doctors referred her to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for further care. She sustained burns to part of her face, police said.
Investigators recovered a bottle from the scene, which is being examined as part of the inquiry. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Mokama police said multiple angles are being explored and efforts are under way to identify and apprehend the accused. The incident has once again drawn attention to the persistent threat of acid attacks and the vulnerability of women commuting alone, even in familiar surroundings.
