Patna: Bihar government is preparing for a major change in its economy by entering the world of high-tech industries. For a long time, the state has been known mainly for farming, small businesses and migrant labour. Now, the government wants to create a new identity by making Bihar a centre for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. Three large chip-related units are planned, and officials say this could create more than 200,000 jobs in the coming years. This move is expected to help Bihar grow faster and give young people new career opportunities at home.
To make this plan successful, the state government has approved a special Bihar Semiconductor Policy. Under this policy, the goal is to increase the semiconductor sector’s share in Bihar’s economy to 5% of the state’s GSDP within five years. The government wants to attract big companies by offering strong financial support. Along with the incentives given by the central government, Bihar will provide an extra 20% subsidy to companies that invest in the state. This is meant to make Bihar more attractive than other states for high-tech industries.
The government has also created the Bihar Semiconductor Mission to manage and monitor the entire project. A high-level committee, led by the Chief Secretary, will supervise all activities. The mission plans to promote more than 10 semiconductor design houses, develop modern chip packaging facilities and set up world-class semiconductor centres in the state. At the same time, special training and skill programmes will be introduced so that local youth can work in these new industries instead of moving to other states for jobs.
In another important step, the state has decided to support Global Capability Centers (GCCs) set up by international companies. These centres will handle research, design, IT services and business operations. Companies that give priority to hiring people from Bihar will receive higher grants. The government has also announced rental support and capital subsidies of up to Rs 50 crore for setting up GCCs. Together, these efforts show that Bihar is serious about building a strong, modern and job-rich economy based on technology and innovation.
