Patna: Bihar is preparing to establish a dedicated defence corridor aimed at expanding its industrial base and creating large-scale employment opportunities for young people, deputy chief minister and home minister Samrat Choudhary has said. The proposal forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to attract investment and strengthen manufacturing capacity.
A team from the Ministry of Defence is currently visiting the state to conduct a feasibility study and evaluate potential locations for the project. Officials say the corridor could position the state as an emerging centre for defence production and advanced technologies, sectors that have traditionally been concentrated in a handful of industrial states.
Choudhary met senior officers and experts from the National Defence Academy at his official residence earlier this week to discuss the project’s scope and long-term prospects. He described the initiative as a significant step towards both industrial and strategic development, adding that the corridor would enable the manufacture of arms, equipment and other supplies for the armed forces. Public and private companies are expected to operate within the proposed zone.
The deputy chief minister reiterated the government’s focus on job creation under the leadership of chief minister Nitish Kumar. He said more than 5 million people had been provided government jobs and employment opportunities over the past five years, and the administration has set a target of creating 10 million jobs in the next five years. The aim, he added, is to reduce the need for young people to migrate outside the state in search of work.
Alongside the defence corridor, authorities are developing a large industrial corridor in the Dobhi area of Gaya district, which is expected to become a key growth hub. Plans are also underway for a semiconductor manufacturing park and the expansion of industrial zones in Bhagalpur and other districts.
Officials believe that these combined initiatives could accelerate industrialisation, draw private investment and reshape the state’s economic landscape in the coming years, offering new opportunities in manufacturing, technology and skilled employment.
