Patna: In a significant decision that brings relief to thousands of aspiring doctors, the National Medical Commission has clarified that students who passed Class 12 through recognised open school boards are eligible to appear for NEET UG 2026. The move ends years of uncertainty faced by open board candidates whose applications were often rejected despite their boards being government-recognised.
The confusion had led to legal challenges, including petitions in the Supreme Court of India in 2025. Petitioners argued that open schooling is a valid mode of education and students should not be denied equal opportunities. Following recommendations from the medical regulator, the National Testing Agency issued a notice confirming that open board students meeting the academic criteria can apply for the 2026 examination.
Under the updated guidelines, candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12. The minimum marks requirement remains unchanged — 50% for general category students, with relaxation for reserved categories as per government rules. The board from which the student has passed must be recognised by the central or state government. Officials said the clarification ensures equal treatment regardless of whether the student studied in a regular school or through open learning.
Education experts say the decision will particularly help students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds who often opt for open schooling due to financial or family constraints. Teachers have stressed that while eligibility is now clear, candidates must carefully check their documents and ensure all information in the application form matches official certificates to avoid complications during admission.
