Patna: Bihar is expected to witness above-normal rainfall and relatively moderate temperatures during May, according to a monthly forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department’s Patna Meteorological Centre.
Above-Normal Rainfall Expected
The bulletin indicates that many parts of the state are likely to receive higher-than-normal rainfall during the month. The average rainfall for May in Bihar is around 59.1 mm, with forecasts suggesting an increased probability of excess precipitation this year.
Meteorologists said this could be driven by active pre-monsoon conditions, which typically bring thunderstorms and intermittent showers across the region.

Day Temperatures Likely To Stay Lower
The forecast also suggests that maximum temperatures across most parts of the state are likely to remain below normal. The usual maximum temperature range for May in Bihar is between 36°C and 38°C.
This trend is expected to provide some relief from the intense heat typically associated with the month.

Nights May Be Warmer
In contrast, minimum temperatures are likely to remain above normal in many areas. The usual night-time temperatures for May range between 21°C and 24°C, with forecasts indicating slightly warmer nights this season.
Limited Heatwave Conditions
The report notes that heatwave conditions are expected to remain largely within normal limits during the month, suggesting fewer extreme heat events compared with typical years.

April Review Shows Extreme Heat
The outlook follows a hot April, during which the state recorded an average maximum temperature of 39.8°C, with peaks reaching as high as 44.4°C in districts such as Buxar and Rohtas.
Rainfall during April was also significantly above normal, exceeding average levels by 57%, indicating early pre-monsoon activity.
Outlook For May
Overall, meteorologists expect May to be characterised by fluctuating weather patterns, with spells of rain, thunderstorms and cloud cover helping to moderate daytime heat.
Officials said the evolving weather pattern signals an active pre-monsoon phase, which could bring both relief from heat and occasional disruptions due to storms and lightning.
