Bhagalpur/Patna: Praveen Singh Kushwaha, a senior Congress leader in Bihar and the party’s recently appointed Bhagalpur district president, died after a car crash in Uttar Pradesh, party sources said on Friday. He was reportedly travelling from Delhi to Patna when the incident occurred.
The collision took place at about 12.30 pm near Kannauj in the Talgram police station area. According to local reports, the car lost control, scraped against a road divider and then crashed into a central pillar.
The impact severely damaged the vehicle. Kushwaha and another passenger, identified as Kumari Sapna, were seriously injured. Two others in the car, driver Vinod Mandal and Vibhu Aryan, sustained minor injuries.
Police, patrol teams and emergency responders arrived at the scene and began rescue operations. The injured were first taken for initial treatment and later transferred to a medical facility in Tirwa before Kushwaha was moved by relatives to Apollo hospital in Lucknow.
A close associate said Kushwaha was conscious for some time after the crash but later suffered a cardiac arrest during treatment.
Kushwaha was regarded as a prominent Congress figure in Bihar politics. He had recently been appointed Bhagalpur district president and had previously served as vice-president of the state Congress unit as well as a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
He had also contested several elections, including the 2025 Bihar assembly election from Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur district. He had earlier contested seats in Patna Sahib in 2020 and Bhagalpur in 2005.
His death is expected to be felt keenly within the party’s Bihar unit, where he was seen as an active organisational leader.
