Muzaffarpur: Muzaffarpur’s iconic ‘Shahi’ litchis, known for their sweetness and premium quality, are now set to become more accessible than ever before. Consumers will soon be able to order the fruit online and have it delivered directly to their homes, removing the need to visit crowded markets or orchards. This shift is being made possible through partnerships between farmers and major e-commerce companies, marking a new phase in how the fruit is sold and distributed across the country.
Teams from online platforms have started visiting orchards in the district to check the quality of the fruit, understand production capacity and evaluate packaging systems. These visits are aimed at ensuring that only the best litchis are selected for delivery. By working directly with Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), companies are trying to build a smoother supply chain that benefits both growers and buyers. Farmers believe this could help them reach more customers and earn better prices for their produce.
At the same time, infrastructure is being strengthened to support both domestic sales and exports. A cold-chain facility has been set up near the Bandra-Maithi toll plaza, along with a collection centre where farmers can bring their harvested litchis. The fruit is sorted, checked for quality and carefully packed before being shipped to different destinations. Groups like the Rupwara-Marwan FPO, which includes hundreds of farmers, are preparing to send their produce through this system, showing a growing level of organisation in the sector.
Export plans are also expanding this year. Companies such as Superplum are increasing their operations, aiming to send large quantities of litchis to international markets. Major platforms including Amazon, Flipkart, Blinkit and Swiggy are also in touch with suppliers to make the fruit available to customers quickly. While exports last year mainly went to Gulf countries, this season shipments are planned for countries like the Netherlands, the UK, Scotland and Canada, along with Nepal.
With daily collection expected to rise sharply compared to last year, farmers and companies alike are hopeful about the season. The move towards online delivery and wider exports is not just about convenience, but also about giving Muzaffarpur’s famous litchis a larger market and stronger recognition both in India and around the world.
