Patna: Political activity around the Bihar Legislative Council election intensified on the final day of nominations as the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) fielded former MLC Sunil Kumar Singh as its candidate.
Singh filed his nomination papers at the Bihar Legislative Assembly premises on Monday in the presence of senior RJD leaders. However, his candidature has triggered criticism from within the party, with Rohini Acharya openly questioning the decision.
Rohini Acharya’s Criticism
In a post on X, Rohini Acharya launched a sharp attack on Singh without directly naming him in parts of her statement. She accused him of factionalism, betrayal and conduct unbecoming of a party leader.

Questioning the rationale behind the nomination, she asked whether the party had run out of dedicated and loyal workers and leaders. She also expressed concern that long-serving grassroots workers and supporters were being ignored despite their commitment to the party.
Rohini further argued that such decisions had contributed to dissatisfaction among party cadres and supporters. She suggested that the consequences of elevating controversial figures had already been visible in recent political setbacks.
Concern Over Representation
The RJD leader also said that the party has several committed leaders from minority, Yadav, Dalit, backward and marginalised communities who have remained associated with the organisation since its inception.
According to her, overlooking such leaders in favour of others raises serious concerns and may not serve the party’s long-term interests.
RJD Reposes Faith in Sunil Kumar Singh
Despite the criticism, the RJD has once again placed its trust in Sunil Kumar Singh, who is considered a senior party leader and is known to be close to Rabri Devi.
Political observers note that the party’s chances of securing one Legislative Council seat appear strong given the current arithmetic in the Bihar Assembly.
Bihar Legislative Council Election Numbers
Under the existing strength of the Assembly, a candidate requires the support of around 25 MLAs to secure election to the Legislative Council.
With the Mahagathbandhan’s current numbers, the RJD is widely expected to win one seat comfortably, making Singh’s election prospects favourable unless there is an unexpected shift in voting patterns.
