Patna: Bihar has recorded a significant increase in vehicle sales during the first six months of 2026, with demand rising across two-wheelers, passenger vehicles and tractors, reflecting growing consumer spending and changing mobility preferences in the state.

Data from the transport sector shows that sales of both two-wheelers and four-wheelers have risen substantially compared with the same period last year. Industry representatives say the trend is particularly visible in the premium and luxury vehicle segments, where demand for high-end cars and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) is increasing steadily.

Four-Wheeler Sales Rise By 11%

Between 1 January and 19 June 2026, a total of 49,727 four-wheelers were sold in Bihar, marking an increase of around 11% over the corresponding period last year.

For comparison, the state recorded sales of 88,349 passenger vehicles during the whole of 2025.

Automobile dealers report growing interest in premium vehicles priced above Rs20 lakh, especially SUVs. Demand has also strengthened in the luxury segment, where brands such as Mercedes-Benz continue to attract affluent buyers.

According to industry sources, Mercedes vehicles priced above Rs50 lakh are selling at an average rate of three to four units every month in the state.

Dealers also report strong demand for Mahindra’s XUV 7XO, with waiting periods extending to nearly three months in some locations.

Tractor Demand Reflects Agricultural Growth

The rise in vehicle sales has not been confined to urban consumers.

Agricultural equipment sales have also increased, with tractor purchases reportedly reaching 4.75 lakh units this year—around 25,000 more than during the corresponding period last year.

Industry observers say the increase indicates sustained investment in agricultural mechanisation and rural economic activity.

Bihar Outpaces National Growth In Two-Wheeler Market

Two-wheelers remain the largest contributor to Bihar’s vehicle market, with sales growing faster than the national average.

Between 1 January and 19 June, a record 612,372 motorcycles and scooters were sold across the state. During the same period in 2025, sales stood at approximately 575,000 units.

The highest monthly sales this year were recorded in April, when 1,35,273 two-wheelers were sold. January registered the lowest figure at 87,865 units.

The growth rate in Bihar has significantly outperformed the national trend. Across India, around 10.3 million two-wheelers were sold during the same period, representing only a marginal increase over last year’s figures.

Changing Consumption Patterns

Industry analysts say the surge in vehicle sales reflects broader economic and social changes underway in Bihar.

Rising incomes, improved access to financing, expanding road infrastructure and growing aspirations among younger consumers have all contributed to higher demand for personal mobility.

The increasing popularity of premium SUVs and luxury cars is also being viewed as a sign of changing consumption patterns among sections of the state’s middle and upper-income groups.

With vehicle sales continuing to rise across categories, industry stakeholders expect Bihar to remain one of the country’s fastest-growing automobile markets through the remainder of 2026.
