Patna: Bihar has received a significant boost in medical education after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved 740 additional MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges, raising the state’s total intake from 3,420 to 4,160 seats.

The increase is expected to expand opportunities for aspiring medical students within Bihar while making the state a more attractive destination for candidates from across the country.

Government Colleges Get 190 Additional Seats

According to NMC approvals, Bihar’s 12 government medical colleges have collectively gained 190 new MBBS seats, increasing their total intake from 1,520 to 1,710.

Among the biggest beneficiaries are:

  • Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH): 200 to 250 seats
  • Nalanda Medical College Hospital (NMCH): 150 to 200 seats
  • Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH): 120 to 150 seats
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Bhagalpur: 120 to 150 seats
  • Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur: 120 to 150 seats

Seat strength at other government institutions, including IGIMS Patna, ANMMCH Gaya, GMCH Bettiah, GMCH Purnia, JKTMCH Madhepura, ESIC Medical College Bihta and RDJM Medical College, remains unchanged.

Private Medical Colleges Receive Biggest Boost

The state’s 14 private medical colleges account for the largest share of the expansion, receiving 550 additional seats. Their combined intake has increased from 1,900 to 2,450 seats.

Among the major changes:

  • Netaji Subhas Medical College, Bihta: 150 to 250 seats
  • Virat Ramayan Institute of Medical Sciences: 50 to 150 seats
  • Mata Gujri Medical College, Kishanganj: 150 to 200 seats
  • Lord Buddha Koshi Medical College, Saharsa: 150 to 200 seats
  • Mahabodhi Medical College: 100 to 150 seats

Two new private medical colleges have also been approved to admit students from the current academic session:

  • Buddha Hospital and Research Institute – 100 seats
  • Shrinivas Ji Educational and Research Institute of Medical Sciences – 100 seats

Total MBBS Intake Reaches 4,160

With the latest approvals, Bihar will now admit students to 4,160 MBBS seats across 26 medical colleges.

Category Before After
Government medical colleges 1,520 1,710
Private medical colleges 1,900 2,450
Total MBBS seats 3,420 4,160

More Opportunities For Medical Aspirants

Education experts believe the expansion will improve access to medical education in Bihar by creating more seats for students from the state while attracting applicants from elsewhere in India.

The increase is also expected to ease competition for admissions to some extent and could influence admission cut-offs in both government and private medical colleges.

The additional capacity comes as Bihar continues to expand its medical education infrastructure in an effort to produce more doctors and strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce.
