Patna: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna has taken a major step in improving stroke care in Bihar with the inauguration of “Stroke Update 2025,” a multidisciplinary program focused on rapid diagnosis, timely intervention, and collaborative treatment for stroke patients.
The event, jointly organized by the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery, was inaugurated by Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal, Director, AIIMS Patna, who also announced the upcoming launch of a dedicated Acute Stroke Care Unit. The unit is designed for protocol-driven interventions, including thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy, ensuring immediate care for acute stroke patients.
“The establishment of this Acute Stroke Care Unit is a defining step toward providing round-the-clock, evidence-based care. Timely intervention is the key to preserving life and neurological function,” said Prof. Agarwal.
Prof. Vikas Chandra Jha, Head of Neurosurgery, highlighted the growing burden of stroke in India, noting that nearly 80% of strokes are ischemic and can be treated effectively if intervention is timely. He emphasized the rising incidence among younger, productive populations, making rapid access to care critical.
The program included expert lectures on acute stroke management, rehabilitation, and multidisciplinary coordination, featuring speakers from AIIMS, PMCH, IGIMS, and other regional hospitals. Approximately 200 neurophysicians, neurosurgeons, general physicians, and caregivers attended, sharing insights on emergency triage, neurointervention, and improving patient outcomes across Bihar.
AIIMS leadership underscored the urgent need to expand acute stroke care infrastructure and develop a fully equipped, state-of-the-art stroke centre in the state. The initiative aligns with the National Health Programme’s mission-based approach, incorporating ambulance-based rapid response and advanced neurointervention services.
“Stroke Update 2025 represents a milestone in neurological care in Bihar, reflecting AIIMS Patna’s commitment to innovation, compassion, and clinical excellence,” said Prof. Jha.
