Patna: Traffic is expected to begin on the Amas–Darbhanga Expressway by December 2026, with construction work currently 25% complete, the Union minister of state for road transport and highways, Ajay Tamta, told parliament on Thursday.
Responding to a question from BJP MP Gopal Ji Thakur of Darbhanga, Tamta said the 189km expressway would pass through seven districts of Bihar and significantly improve connectivity in the region. He added that plans were also under way to extend the expressway to Nepal.
The project is expected to reduce travel time between Patna and Darbhanga by around four hours once operational. It will connect 19 cities across the state, including Gaya, Aurangabad, Patna and Darbhanga, and pass through the districts of Aurangabad, Gaya, Jehanabad, Patna, Vaishali, Samastipur and Darbhanga. In Patna, the expressway will cross the river Ganges via the six-lane Kacchi Dargah–Bidupur bridge.
During the discussion, Thakur raised concerns over delays in other infrastructure projects in his constituency. He pointed out that only 15km of the 527B national highway on the Darbhanga–Jaynagar stretch had been tendered despite the project being pending for several years. He also questioned the slow pace of work on the Darbhanga elevated corridor and the Darbhanga railway overbridge.
In response, Tamta said further action on the Darbhanga–Jaynagar stretch would be taken soon and that the work was expected to be completed in the coming financial year. On the elevated corridor and the railway overbridge, he said the central government had sought the state government’s response and that the matter was under consideration.
The Amas–Darbhanga expressway is among several road projects aimed at boosting connectivity and economic activity in Bihar, particularly in north and central parts of the state.
