Patna: The swearing-in ceremony of Bihar’s newly expanded cabinet at Gandhi Maidan in Patna created several political talking points, but one brief moment on stage attracted more attention than anything else. Union home minister Amit Shah was seen warmly embracing senior BJP leader Mangal Pandey, patting him on the back and speaking to him for a few moments. Soon after the ceremony, the image began circulating widely on social media and among political circles, with many interpreting it as a strong signal from the BJP leadership.
Mangal Pandey’s absence from the newly expanded Bihar cabinet had already surprised many party workers and supporters. He has been one of the BJP’s most experienced faces in Bihar politics and served as the state’s health minister for several years. Apart from his ministerial role, Pandey has also held important organisational responsibilities in the party, including serving as Bihar BJP president and handling election duties in different states. Because of his long political experience and close connection with the party leadership, many leaders expected him to remain part of the cabinet.
Political observers believe Amit Shah’s public gesture was not just a routine greeting. In the BJP, public interactions between senior leaders are often closely watched for political meaning. Shah’s body language towards Mangal Pandey has led to speculation that the BJP still sees him as an important figure and may be preparing him for a bigger responsibility outside the Bihar government. Many within the party believe his role in the organisation could become more important in the coming years, especially as the BJP prepares its long-term strategy ahead of future elections.
According to party sources, Mangal Pandey may soon be given a significant organisational role at the national level. Discussions are already taking place about the possibility of him becoming a BJP national general secretary or being appointed as the party’s in-charge for a major state. Some leaders have also suggested that he could eventually find a place in the Union cabinet. The BJP has often shifted experienced leaders from state governments into organisational roles to strengthen election planning and party management across the country.
At the same time, the Bihar cabinet expansion under deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary has highlighted the BJP’s attempt to promote new faces and reshape its political strategy in the state. Leaders such as Mithilesh Tiwari and Nitish Mishra have been brought forward as part of a broader effort to balance caste and regional representation while also introducing a younger generation of leadership. Political analysts believe the BJP is preparing early for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and building a stronger organisational structure for the future.
For now, the photograph of Amit Shah and Mangal Pandey at Gandhi Maidan has become one of the most discussed images from the ceremony. Even though Pandey did not get a place in the Bihar cabinet, the interaction has clearly shown that his importance within the BJP remains strong and that his political career may be moving towards a new chapter rather than coming to an end.
