Patna: A significant technological upgrade has been introduced in Bihar’s rail network, with East Central Railway commissioning automatic block signalling on a key stretch within the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) division. The system became operational on March 16 across the 18.7km Baghoi Kusa–Jakhim–Rafiganj section, marking a step forward in modernising train operations in the region.
The rollout involved extensive modifications to electronic interlocking systems at several stations, including Pusauli, Baghoi Kusa, Jakhim and Rafiganj. Railway officials said these upgrades would streamline train movements while strengthening operational safety across the route. Four auto huts have also been installed as part of the project.
The integration of level crossing gates numbered 20, 21, 22 and 24 into the interlocking system is expected to improve coordination between rail and road traffic. This synchronisation reduces the risk of accidents and ensures smoother movement for both trains and vehicles at crossings.
Officials highlighted the use of advanced signalling technologies, including integrated power supply systems, data loggers, maintenance-free earthing and lightning protection. Additional systems such as automatic fire detection and alarm mechanisms have been deployed to enhance overall reliability.
The new signalling system allows trains to operate with reduced headway, enabling more trains to run on the same track without compromising safety. This is likely to increase line capacity and improve punctuality, a long-standing concern for passengers.
With this latest commissioning, a total of 113 route kilometres in the DDU division are now equipped with automatic block signalling. Railway authorities described the development as a milestone that will support rising passenger and freight demand while offering faster and safer journeys.
