Sabour: Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour has unveiled a comprehensive action plan aimed at transforming Makhana into a globally recognised superfood. The announcement came during a high-level review of the Makhana Development Scheme (MDS), chaired by Dr Anil Kumar Singh, Director of Research at BAU and CEO of MDS.
The meeting brought together scientists and institutional representatives to discuss strategies for increasing farmer income, improving seed quality, and expanding the presence of Makhana in international markets. Key attendees included Dr Shailbala Dey, Prof Dilip Kumar Mahato, Dr Anil Kumar, Dr Tapan Gorai, Dr Abhinav Kumar, Dr Bal Krishna and Dr Preeti Sundaram, along with other committee members and stakeholders.
Innovation, Farmer Training and Organic Initiative
Discussions focused on the review of pilot projects, variety improvement, pest management, and promotion of organic Makhana under the ‘Know Your Crop’ initiative. Committee members agreed to organise fortnightly “Makhana Chaupals” to share scientific insights with farmers. Plans for training modules, area-specific agricultural packages, and broader dissemination through Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) were also finalised.
“Makhana is not only a Mithila crop but also the pride of India. As a climate-resilient superfood, it has immense nutritional and economic potential. It will enhance the income of farmers as well as strengthen India’s export basket. BAU Sabour is committed to taking technology to the farm level through MDS,” said Dr Anil Kumar Singh.
Public–Private Partnership on the Horizon
An MoU is under consideration between BAU Sabour and ITC Limited to expand cultivation and ensure better market access for farmers. This collaboration aims to strengthen the entire Makhana value chain, from pond to plate.
Dr D.R., Vice Chancellor of BAU Sabour, praised the progress, highlighting that BAU has emerged as a national centre for Makhana research and development. Through the Makhana Vikas Yojana, production is increasing, and efforts are underway to build a global identity for Mithila Makhana.
The meeting concluded with a collective resolve to make Bihar the epicentre of India’s Makhana revolution, reinforcing BAU Sabour’s role in sustainable agricultural innovation and farmer-centric development.
