Gayaji: A tragic accident in Bihar’s Gayaji district on Tuesday claimed the lives of three young men after they were electrocuted by a high-voltage power line. The incident took place in Kheda village of Ucholi panchayat in the Khizarsarai block, where a sudden failure of an overhead electric wire turned an ordinary winter evening into a scene of horror. After the incident, silence and sorrow spread across the village, with families and neighbours struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.
The deceased have been identified as Golu Yadav (28), Nitish Yadav (27) and Raja Yadav (22). All three were residents of the same village, and two of them, Golu and Nitish, were cousins. According to villagers, Nitish and Golu were sitting outside a house, warming themselves by a small fire, when an 11,000-volt electricity wire passing nearby suddenly broke and fell to the ground. Because the ground was wet, the electric current spread quickly, trapping them before they could escape.
Eyewitnesses said Golu Yadav suffered severe burns after coming in contact with the live wire. Seeing his cousin in pain, Nitish rushed forward to help him, but he too was electrocuted. Raja Yadav, a close friend who was nearby, ran towards them in an attempt to save their lives. Although he was initially thrown back by the shock, he tried again, only to be caught in the electric current himself. Within seconds, all three young men died on the spot.
Police from Khizarsarai police station reached the village soon after receiving information about the incident. The bodies were taken into custody and sent to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations. The electricity department was also informed, and an investigation has been started to understand how the wire snapped. Local residents, however, have already blamed poor maintenance.
Villagers and the families of the deceased have accused the electricity department of long-term negligence. They say the power lines in the area have been in a dangerous condition for years and that several complaints were made, but no repairs were carried out. Residents are now demanding compensation for the affected families and strict action against responsible officials, warning that without urgent repairs, such deadly accidents could happen again.
