Patna: Bhojpuri folk singer Devi, known for her fearless stand against obscenity in regional music, has become a single mother with the help of a German sperm bank. She gave birth to a healthy son through IVF on September 9 at AIIMS Rishikesh, later sharing her happiness on social media.
Devi described her decision as a step towards reclaiming personal autonomy, insisting that motherhood should not be restricted by marriage. “If a woman is mentally and physically ready, she should have every right to embrace motherhood on her own terms,” she wrote.
Her announcement triggered a wave of support online, with many fans calling her move a “historic” and “inspirational” moment for Bhojpuri society, where traditional thinking often shapes women’s choices.
This was not Devi’s first attempt—she had tried to become a mother seven years ago but did not succeed. With the backing of her family and modern reproductive technology, her long-cherished dream has now become reality.
Devi’s career has long been marked by defiance of convention. She is celebrated for reviving traditional Bhojpuri folk songs and distancing herself from commercial tracks laden with obscenity. Her decision to become a single mother through assisted reproduction is seen by many as a natural extension of that same spirit—challenging boundaries and giving voice to women’s independence.
