Patna: The Bihar government has promoted 19 officers of the Bihar Administrative Service (BAS) to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), a significant development amid the ongoing assembly elections in the state.
The General Administration Department on Sunday issued an official notification implementing the promotions. All 19 officers were serving in various districts across Bihar before their elevation.
The move follows the central government’s approval, which was notified a few days ago, paving the way for the state to formally induct the officers into the IAS cadre.
Officials said the promotion process had been under consideration for several months, involving coordination between the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), and the Bihar government’s personnel department.
The elevation comes at a critical time for Bihar’s administrative machinery, which is under pressure to manage election duties, law and order, and post-monsoon recovery efforts simultaneously.
Sources in the General Administration Department said the promoted officers would soon be assigned new postings based on cadre requirements and administrative priorities.
The notification marks another step in the state’s efforts to fill key administrative positions that have remained vacant due to retirements and transfers.
