Patna: The government of Bihar has announced that artificial intelligence (AI) will be introduced in all 38 government engineering colleges from the upcoming academic session, in a move aimed at modernising technical education across the state.
Officials said the decision forms part of a broader push to provide state-of-the-art academic facilities and embed emerging technologies into the curriculum. Innovation will be actively encouraged in each institution, with dedicated financial support for new infrastructure and laboratories.
Under the 2026–27 financial year budget, each college will receive Rs 30 lakh to establish AI-based laboratories. The Department of Science, Technology and Technical Education has made specific provisions to integrate AI into coursework and promote research-led learning among students.
Sunil Kumar, the state’s minister for science and technology, has directed that AI education be offered free of cost in all government engineering colleges. The department said the initiative marks a significant step towards upgrading public technical institutions and aligning them with national standards.
The All India Council for Technical Education has instructed colleges to accelerate infrastructure development, while premier institutions such as the IITs and IIITs are expected to support the upgrade process. The Ministry of Education has also introduced “Project Practice” – short for Project for Advancing Critical Thinking, Industry Connect and Employability – to strengthen industry links and enhance job readiness among students.
