Bhagalpur: An unannounced visit by industrialist Gautam Adani to Pirpainti on Sunday has drawn attention to a Rs 30,000-crore thermal power project that could reshape the region’s industrial prospects. The 2,400-MW facility, currently under development in Pirpainti, is among the largest private investments in the state’s energy sector and is expected to significantly expand power generation capacity.
Officials said the project reflects growing investor confidence and signals readiness for large-scale private capital in eastern India. Once completed, the plant is projected to reduce reliance on electricity imports from other states while supporting industrial growth and infrastructure development.
The facility will operate using ultra-supercritical technology, an advanced coal-based generation method designed to improve efficiency and lower emissions compared with conventional thermal plants. Spread across nearly 479 hectares, the site’s location along the Ganga River and its proximity to national highways provide logistical advantages for fuel transport and power distribution.
Employment generation is expected to be a major outcome of the project. Company estimates suggest that 10,000–12,000 direct and indirect jobs could be created during the construction phase, with around 3,000 permanent roles once operations begin. The development is also likely to stimulate ancillary industries, transportation services and logistics networks in Bhagalpur and surrounding districts.
Energy analysts say the additional capacity could help address rising electricity demand and improve grid stability, a key factor for industrial expansion. The project is widely viewed as a strategic investment in infrastructure and energy security, with industry observers describing it as a potential catalyst for long-term regional economic growth.
