Patna: Bihar’s upcoming assembly elections could hinge on the preferences of the state’s young electorate, with political parties ramping up efforts to capture the attention of voters under 25.
According to the State Election Commission, Bihar has a total of 74.35 million registered voters, of which 17.7 million fall into the 18-29 age group. Among these, 16.3 million are aged 20-29, while 1.4 million are 18-19 years old, including 584,115 women. Notably, 14.84 lakh voters are casting their ballots for the first time.
“The youth vote cannot be ignored,” said a senior election official. “With over half of the state’s population under 25, young voters are poised to play a decisive role in shaping the outcome.”
Political parties are acutely aware of the influence of Gen-Z voters, focusing their campaigns on issues such as education, employment, and skill development. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has sought to appeal to young voters by highlighting ongoing development projects, while the opposition Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) has promised enhanced education, employment opportunities, and pathways for skill-based growth.
Both alliances are increasingly leveraging social media to connect with young voters, sharing manifestos, promises, and interactive campaigns online. Public rallies and events have also intensified, with leaders emphasising industrial development, internships, and schemes that allow students to earn while studying.
As Bihar heads to the polls, analysts say that the mobilisation of first-time and young voters could be pivotal in determining the election outcome.
