Patna: In a major pre-election security move, the Bihar prison authorities on Sunday transferred 14 inmates from Patna’s Adarsh Central Jail in Beur to Bhagalpur Central Jail under tight security. The transfer, coming weeks ahead of the state assembly elections, includes several notorious prisoners such as Ajay Verma and former MLA Munna Shukla.
According to officials, the decision was taken to prevent any possible disruption or influence during the election period. Those shifted also include Laxmi Singh, Vishal, Jayantkant, Bablu Chandan, Bharat, Gautam Kumar, Avinash Kumar, Neeraj Chaudhary, Danish, Sonu Kumar, and Shubham — all facing serious criminal charges. Jail authorities said their activities had been under close surveillance in recent weeks.
The Sunday transfers follow a similar action last Thursday, when 14 other inmates were moved from Beur Jail to the Special Central Jail in Bhagalpur. Among them were Ravi Gop, Tausif alias Badshah, DD, Niaz Ahmed, Shankar Rai, Shahbaz alias Shaukat, Vijay Kant Pandey, Rajesh Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Roshan Sharma, Vijay Sahni, Mohammad Raja, Mohammad Danish, and Monu Kumar.
Ravi Gop, a resident of Nala Road, reportedly faces around 16 criminal cases across multiple police stations in Patna, including Kadamkuan, Pirbahor, and Phulwarisharif. Tausif, known as Badshah, is accused in the high-profile Chandan Mishra murder case.
Chhath Devotion Inside Beur Jail
Amid the heightened security measures, the spirit of the Chhath festival has also found its way inside the Beur Jail. This year, 38 inmates — including 15 women — are observing the four-day festival, with the jail administration arranging all necessary facilities for rituals and offerings.
A pond within the jail premises has been converted into a Chhath Ghat, decorated with flowers and LED lights for devotees to offer Arghya to the setting and rising sun on Monday evening and Tuesday morning.
The jail superintendent said that special attention has been given to cleanliness, safety, and convenience for the inmates participating in the festival. “Every care has been taken to ensure that the spirit of faith and discipline coexist harmoniously within the prison walls,” the official added.
