Patna: Bihar has recorded its highest-ever electricity demand, with peak consumption reaching 9,031 MW at 9.30pm on Wednesday, marking the first time the state has crossed the 9,000 MW threshold.
Officials said the record demand was successfully met by Bihar’s power sector without disruption, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply to consumers across the state despite the unprecedented load on the network.
The achievement comes amid steadily rising energy consumption, reflecting Bihar’s economic growth, expanding infrastructure and improving access to electricity in both urban and rural areas.
Record Demand Met Without Disruption
According to the Energy Department, all components of the state’s power system worked in coordination to meet the peak demand while maintaining reliable service.
Officials attributed the performance to continued investments in power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure over recent years.
Despite the surge in demand, consumers across Bihar continued to receive uninterrupted and quality electricity supply, the department said.
Indicator Of Economic Growth
Ajay Yadav, Energy Secretary and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL), described the rising electricity demand as a sign of broader economic and social development.
He said growing power consumption reflects both expanding economic activity and improving living standards among consumers.
“The state’s electricity demand is continuously increasing, which is an indicator of Bihar’s economic growth and positive changes in the lifestyle of consumers,” Yadav said.
He added that successfully managing a record demand of 9,031 MW demonstrated the preparedness and commitment of the state’s power sector workforce.

Bihar’s Peak Power Demand Touches Record 8,838 MW As Electricity Consumption Continues To Rise
Demand Expected To Rise Further
The latest milestone had been anticipated by power sector officials, who had projected that Bihar would cross the 9,000 MW mark during June.
With that target now achieved, authorities expect electricity demand to continue rising in the coming months. Current projections indicate that peak demand could exceed 9,500 MW before the end of the year.
Officials said preparations are already underway to strengthen infrastructure and ensure that future increases in demand can be met without affecting supply reliability.
Expanding Energy Needs
The sharp increase in electricity consumption highlights Bihar’s growing energy requirements as industrial activity, urbanisation, agricultural demand and household consumption continue to expand.
Over the past decade, the state has significantly increased power availability and improved electrification, resulting in higher consumption levels across sectors.
Energy officials said maintaining reliable supply amid rising demand will remain a key priority as Bihar’s economy and population continue to grow.
