Patna: The Bihar higher education department has sent a proposal to the Governor’s Secretariat to start evening classes in 10 prominent colleges across the state, in a move aimed at expanding higher education opportunities and making better use of existing academic infrastructure.
Officials said the proposal covers six colleges in Patna and four in other districts.
The department said the initiative would help accommodate more students in reputed institutions and provide opportunities for working professionals to continue their education.
AN College to be developed as deemed university
Chief minister Samrat Choudhary announced that Anugrah Narayan (AN) College in Patna would be developed as a deemed university.
The announcement was made during an event marking the birth anniversary of Anugrah Narayan Sinha and the college’s foundation day.
The government said the move is part of broader efforts to strengthen higher education infrastructure in Bihar.

The colleges proposed for evening classes include:
- Patna Science College

Focus on access and infrastructure use
In a letter to the Governor’s Secretariat, higher education secretary Rajiv Ranjan said these institutions remain highly sought-after because of their academic reputation and quality.
He said introducing evening sessions would allow better utilisation of infrastructure and increase student intake without requiring major expansion.
The department also said the arrangement could encourage greater participation of women in higher education.
Police station on AN College campus to be shifted
Separately, the chief minister said the police station currently functioning on the AN College campus would be shifted to another location within 10 days.
The police station had been established earlier for security reasons in the area.
Choudhary said the state government was working to strengthen Bihar’s education system through teacher recruitment, infrastructure development and quality improvement from primary to higher education levels.
