Patna: Bihar’s newly appointed Governor, Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain, marked his first official engagement in the state by visiting the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) on Monday, lauding the state’s initiatives in professional and technology-driven disaster management.
During a special programme and press interaction at the BSDMA auditorium, the Governor inspected the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) at Sardar Patel Bhawan, receiving briefings on modern technological systems and operational protocols designed to respond to natural calamities.

“Bihar is often seen as disaster-prone, with floods, droughts, lightning strikes, and drowning incidents posing persistent challenges,” the Governor said. “Professional systems, modern technology, and institutional coordination are essential to mitigate these risks. The arrangements here show that disaster management in Bihar has been structured systematically and professionally.”
The Governor formally launched the Authority’s new website and viewed a short film highlighting BSDMA’s activities and achievements. He emphasised the importance of public awareness, education, and adherence to the Sendai Framework (2015–2030) and the Prime Minister’s “10-Point Agenda” for disaster management. He also urged periodic self-assessments and external evaluations to enhance preparedness, stressing that coordinated efforts could minimise loss of life from floods and river erosion.

BSDMA Vice-Chairman Dr Uday Kant welcomed the Governor, describing his guidance as a “beacon” for the institution, while Director General of Police Vinay Kumar highlighted the integration of disaster management modules into police training, strengthening the force’s role as first responders. Secretary of the Department of Disaster Management Dr Chandrashekhar Singh added that the state’s disaster preparedness is being continuously enhanced through modern technology and interdepartmental coordination.

Senior officials from the Department of Disaster Management, other government departments, and media representatives attended the event, which concluded with the Governor interacting with members of the press.
