Patna: The Bihar government has launched a fresh push to strengthen grassroots sports by directing all district sports offices to hold meetings with elected members of sports clubs at gram panchayat and nagar panchayat levels. The move is aimed at activating underused sports infrastructure and ensuring facilities are better aligned with local needs.
According to the Department of Sports, the meetings are intended to gather practical feedback on how existing grounds, stadiums and facilities are being used, and what is needed to improve participation and player development. Districts have been asked to compile suggestions from these consultations and submit a consolidated report to the department by 31 January 2026.
Several districts have already begun the process. In Darbhanga, a district-level meeting was held at Nehru Stadium in Laheriasarai, where officials discussed the formation of sports clubs at the panchayat level and plans for indoor and outdoor stadiums at the block level. Club representatives also raised the issue of identifying talent early and providing pathways for players to compete at national and international levels.
Similar meetings have taken place in Araria’s Raniganj block, as well as in Banka’s Barahat and Belhar blocks, where elected club members discussed day-to-day operations and local challenges. In Madhubani, sports clubs from Rahika block shared their experiences and suggestions on improving participation and facilities.
The department has also opened the consultation to the wider public through an online feedback form, allowing citizens to submit their views directly. Officials say the responses will be analysed to draw up an action plan focused on expanding access to sports, sharpening young talent, and making fuller use of infrastructure at the village and town level.
