Patna: Bihar is witnessing extreme and rapidly shifting weather conditions, with residents across the state caught between severe heatwaves and the threat of thunderstorms, rainfall and lightning.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for heatwave conditions in four districts on Sunday, while a Yellow Alert for rain and thunderstorms has been sounded for five other districts.
Officials warned that winds reaching speeds of up to 50kmph could accompany storm activity in affected regions.
Heatwave Conditions Continue Across Bihar
Large parts of Bihar, particularly South and Central Bihar, continued to experience intense heat on Saturday.
According to the Patna Meteorological Centre:
- Dehri in Rohtas recorded 45.1C
- The reading was the highest temperature recorded in Bihar this year
- It also marked the hottest May temperature in the state in the last 14 years
Officials noted that Bihar had earlier recorded a peak of 44.4C on May 22.
Overcast Skies and Storm Activity Expected
Meteorologists said pre-monsoon activity had become active across Bihar, resulting in unstable weather patterns likely to continue over the next five days.
Forecast conditions include:
- Overcast skies in several districts
- Thunderstorms and rainfall in isolated areas
- Strong winds and lightning activity
- Continued heatwave conditions in some regions
The IMD said immediate relief from heat was unlikely in several parts of South Bihar, including Patna.

Patna Likely to Remain Hot and Humid
Residents of Patna are expected to continue facing hot and humid conditions over the coming days.
According to forecasts:
- Maximum temperatures are likely to remain between 37C and 38C until May 27
- Minimum temperatures may hover around 27C to 28C
- Light cloud cover is expected during afternoon hours
- Partly cloudy skies are forecast for May 26 and May 27
- Chances of significant rainfall remain low
Roads and Public Spaces Deserted During Peak Heat
Between 12pm and 4pm on Saturday, temperatures crossed 40C in at least 13 districts across Bihar.
Officials said intense sunshine and hot winds significantly reduced movement on roads, with both pedestrians and vehicles remaining sparse during peak afternoon hours.
Public Advisory Issued by Weather Department
The weather department urged residents to remain cautious during both heatwave and storm conditions.
Authorities advised people to:
- Avoid stepping outdoors between 12pm and 4pm unless necessary
- Stay away from open fields during thunderstorms
- Avoid sheltering under trees or near electricity poles
- Remain hydrated during heatwave conditions
Farmers were also advised to exercise caution while working in fields amid the possibility of lightning and strong winds.
