Patna: Bihar is experiencing rapidly changing weather conditions, with heavy rainfall reported in some districts while several other areas continue to face rising temperatures and humid nights. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a special weather warning for multiple districts for the coming week.
Rainfall And Thunderstorms Reported Across Bihar
According to the Meteorological Department, scattered rainfall was recorded in parts of the state over the past 24 hours. Purnia received heavy rainfall, while Darbhanga witnessed intense thunderstorms accompanied by lightning activity.
At the same time, several districts recorded minimum temperatures between 1.6°C and 3°C above normal levels. The rise in night-time temperatures has increased humidity, offering little relief from the prevailing heat.
Heatwave And Warm Night Warning
The IMD has forecast variable weather conditions across Bihar over the next seven days. Between May 21 and May 24, severe heatwave conditions may affect several regions of the state.
The department has also warned of “warm night” conditions on May 21 in certain areas, where temperatures are expected to remain unusually high even after sunset.
Thunderstorm Alert For Multiple Districts
Weather warnings have been issued for districts including Samastipur, Shivhar, Araria, Kishanganj, Supaul, East Champaran and West Champaran.
These areas may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h, according to the department.
Possibility Of Heavy Rainfall
The IMD stated that isolated locations in Bihar could receive heavy rainfall on May 21 and May 24. Light and scattered showers are also expected in some parts of the state between May 25 and May 27.
Advisory Issued For Farmers
Agricultural experts have advised farmers to take precautionary measures due to the possibility of hailstorms and sudden weather fluctuations.
Farmers have been asked to use hail nets or protective covers for orchards, particularly mango and litchi plantations, as well as vegetable crops. Temporary shade nets have also been recommended to protect young fruit saplings from intense heat.
Experts further advised maintaining soil moisture through light but frequent irrigation and using mulching materials such as straw, crop residue or polythene sheets to reduce water evaporation.
Public Safety Measures
The Meteorological Department has urged residents to avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours unless necessary. People have also been advised to remain hydrated and take shelter in safe locations during thunderstorms and strong winds.
