Patna: The Bihar government has approved the Chief Minister Bihar Heli Tourism Service Scheme 2026, paving the way for helicopter-based tourism services to some of the state’s prominent religious and tourist destinations. The initiative is aimed at improving accessibility for visitors while strengthening Bihar’s tourism sector.
In the first phase, the scheme will cover Maa Mundeshwari Temple in Kaimur district, one of the country’s oldest and most revered Shakti Peeths. The temple attracts thousands of devotees annually but remains relatively difficult to access due to its distance from major urban centres.
Helicopter Service to Begin from July 15
According to the approved plan, the first phase of the heli tourism service is proposed to operate from July 15, 2026, to January 15, 2027.
The service will be managed by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC), which will offer helicopter rides to tourists and pilgrims at subsidised rates.
Officials believe the initiative will significantly reduce travel time and provide a more convenient option for visitors travelling to the temple.
Long-Standing Demand for Better Connectivity
Residents and tourism stakeholders in Kaimur have long demanded improved air connectivity for the district. Due to its geographical location, road journeys to several tourist and religious sites often take considerable time.
The introduction of helicopter services is expected to address this challenge and make travel easier, particularly for elderly pilgrims and tourists visiting from outside the state.
Small Helicopters to Be Used
Under the scheme, operations will be conducted using plus-two seater category helicopters. The government has stated that the aircraft will provide a safe and efficient travel experience while ensuring operational feasibility during the pilot phase.
Visitors opting for the service will be required to select from designated tourism packages prepared by the tourism corporation.
Tourism Sector Expected to Benefit
The state government expects the scheme to increase footfall at Maa Mundeshwari Temple and encourage greater tourist participation in the region. Officials also anticipate that the initiative will create new opportunities for local businesses linked to tourism and hospitality.
Based on the response received during the initial six-month period, the government may consider expanding helicopter connectivity to other important tourist and religious destinations across Bihar.
Why It Matters
The heli tourism scheme marks Bihar’s first major attempt to integrate helicopter services into its tourism infrastructure. If successful, the initiative could improve connectivity to remote heritage and pilgrimage sites while opening new avenues for tourism-led economic growth in the state.
