Patna: The southwest monsoon has made rapid progress across Bihar, spreading to nearly half of the state within a day of its arrival. By Friday afternoon, the monsoon’s northern limit had advanced up to Muzaffarpur, bringing widespread rainfall to several regions.
According to weather officials, the monsoon has already covered Kosi, Seemanchal, Mithila and large parts of eastern Bihar. Heavy rainfall activity continues in several districts of Seemanchal and eastern Bihar, while residents of Patna are still awaiting the season’s first monsoon showers.
Meteorologists said weather conditions remain favourable for further advancement of the monsoon. It is expected to reach Patna within the next 24 hours and spread across the remaining districts of Bihar over the next 48 to 72 hours.
Entered Through Purnea on Thursday
The southwest monsoon entered Bihar through Purnea on Thursday morning and covered seven districts on its first day. Its pace accelerated on Friday, allowing it to spread across nearly half of the state within 24 hours.
In a statement issued on Friday afternoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the monsoon had advanced further into parts of Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand on June 12. The department added that atmospheric conditions are favourable for its continued progress over additional parts of Bihar during the next two to three days.
Heavy Rain Warning for Five Districts
The weather department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for five districts on June 13. The districts likely to be affected are Bhagalpur, Banka, Katihar, Purnea and Kishanganj.
Apart from heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning activity are expected in several parts of the state. An Orange Alert has been issued for districts in south Bihar, the Champaran region, Patna and parts of eastern Bihar.
Monsoon Activity May Weaken From Sunday
While rainfall is expected to continue over the next couple of days, meteorologists have indicated that the intensity of monsoon activity could weaken slightly from Sunday onwards.
Officials have advised residents to remain alert during periods of thunderstorms and lightning and to follow weather advisories issued by local authorities.
