Patna: Chowkidars and dafadars of Bihar Police staged a protest in Patna on Tuesday, pressing their long-pending demand for compassionate appointments. The workers marched from Gandhi Maidan towards chief minister Nitish Kumar’s residence, raising slogans against the government, but were stopped by police at Dakbunglow Crossing, where barricades had been set up. Traffic, which was disrupted for some time, was later restored.
The protesters said they have been demanding for years that dependents of deceased chowkidars and dafadars be given government jobs. “Our work involves risk, as we often provide crucial information to police. When we die, our families should not be left helpless,” one protester said.
According to demonstrators, the government has been ignoring their appeals, forcing them to take to the streets. They vowed to continue their struggle until their demands are met, insisting that the state must consider their issues seriously.
Police said controlling the protest was challenging but necessary to maintain order. The situation was eventually brought under control after a tense standoff.
