Patna: The Nitish Kumar government has unveiled a Rs 91,717 crore supplementary budget for the current financial year, with substantial allocations for women’s employment, welfare schemes and key infrastructure projects. Finance minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav tabled the second supplementary budget in the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, with the House set to vote on it on December 5.
At the centre of the spending plan is the Chief Minister’s Women’s Employment Scheme, which will receive Rs 21,000 crore, and the free electricity scheme, which has been allocated Rs 6,462 crore. The government has also earmarked Rs 389 crore for the Patna Metro Rail Project and Rs 500 crore for the development of four airports in Gayaji, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga and Saharsa.
The budget sets out major commitments across social welfare programmes, including Rs 1,885 crore for the old-age pension scheme, Rs 750 crore for the girl-child graduation incentive scheme, and Rs 288 crore for the intermediate incentive scheme for girls. Another Rs 314 crore has been set aside for the Laxmibai Social Security Pension Scheme.
Infrastructure spending also features prominently, with Rs 861 crore proposed for road construction, alongside Rs 651 crore for flood control measures and Rs 500 crore for industrial development. The government will invest Rs 600 crore in energy companies and spend Rs 500 crore on panchayat government buildings.
Funding has been earmarked for strengthening public institutions, including Rs 400 crore for police buildings, Rs 250 crore for sports infrastructure and stadiums, and Rs 150 crore for new medical colleges. Urban development receives a push with Rs 550 crore for land acquisition and Rs 150 crore for civic amenities.
The supplementary budget also includes Rs 800 crore for the Student Credit Card Scheme and Rs 130 crore for Mahadalit development.
The government has described the budget as a necessary step to meet emerging needs in welfare, infrastructure and public services in the current financial year.
