Patna: A Tirupati-style temple dedicated to Lord Balaji is set to rise in Bihar, after the state government granted a 10.11-acre plot in Mokama Khas on a 99-year lease for a symbolic Rs 1. The move positions Mokama as a potential new hub for religious and cultural tourism in eastern India.
The project follows a proposal by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) of Andhra Pradesh, which sought support from the Bihar Tourism Department. The Patna district administration identified government land currently under the Road Construction Department’s control as a suitable site. With the state government’s approval, plans for a modern, spacious temple complex have gained momentum.
Chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, BR Naidu tweets, “It is a matter of great joy that the Bihar government has approved the construction of a TTD temple in Patna, the capital of Bihar state. Heartfelt thanks for allocating 10.11 acres of land in the Mokama Khas area… pic.twitter.com/jYfqpP54SH

TTD, renowned for managing the Lord Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, also oversees Vedic universities, medical institutions, and spiritual retreat centres across India. The Mokama project will go beyond a traditional temple, encompassing a dharamshala, prayer hall, restaurant, spiritual activity centre, and modern visitor facilities, aiming to create a comprehensive religious tourist destination.
A special team from TTD is expected to coordinate with officials from the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation to finalise the design and commence construction.
TTD Chairman BR Naidu described the project as a “historic opportunity to build a cultural bridge” between Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. He expressed gratitude to the Bihar government and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for their support.
Bihar, already home to prominent Buddhist and Hindu sites such as Gaya, Rajgir, Vaishali, and Patna Sahib, stands to benefit from increased tourism and economic activity. The new temple is expected to create employment opportunities and enhance Mokama’s profile as a spiritual and cultural centre along the Ganges.
